Safe Drinking Water Program in Punjab, Pakistan
Summary:
The Punjab Aab-e-Pak Authority (PAPA), Environment & Energy Cube (EEC), and Project Team ATR (ATR) are collaborating on the ‘Safe Drinking Water Program
in Punjab’. This program aims at providing safe drinking water to the regions with limited access by providing advanced water filtration systems to ensure safe drinking water provision for the residents of Punjab province., thereby improving health and enhancing quality of life.
Additionally, as a part of its environmental strategy, this project will also seek to secure carbon credits. Traditionally, households without access to safe drinking water use firewood and biomass fuels to boil water for purification, generating significant carbon emissions. By replacing these traditional boiling methods of
getting safe drinking water with advanced water filtration systems, this initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
PAPA, as the proprietor of the water filtration plants, assumes responsibility for their operation and management, ensuring compliance with National and WHO
water quality standards. Concurrently, ATR and EEC will collaborate with PAPA to implement and oversee the application and issuance of a carbon reduction program contribution to both public health improvements and environmental sustainability.
Potential Impacts:
- Improved access to safe drinking water for communities
- Creation of employment opportunities for the local communities
- Improved public health and quality of life
- Reduction of Carbon Footprints and Environmental impacts
